There are two words that come up in almost every serious conversation about mindful use of psychedelics: set and setting. Simple concepts, but their influence on your experience is hard to overstate.
Whether you want to start with drops for the first time, or have been microdosing for a while, these two factors are always the starting point. Not the dose, not the product. This first.
What does it mean?
Your inner state: mood, expectations, fears and the intention you begin with.
The place where you are, who is around you, the atmosphere, sounds and light.
Why they are so decisive
Psilocybin amplifies what is already there. An open, calm state of mind in a safe environment increases the chance of a clear experience. Conversely, a tense start in a chaotic environment increases the chance of an overwhelming experience, at the same dose.
"In the best clinical psilocybin studies, therapists pay just as much attention to the preparation and the environment as to the substance itself. Set and setting are not a side issue, they are just as much a part of the outcome.
Set: Your Inner State
How you feel in the run-up to a session lays the foundation. A week of sleep deprivation and stress is not a good starting point. Awareness of your own state is essential.
If the timing does not feel right, listen to that. Postponing is not a failure.
Setting: Your Environment
Start at home. A familiar environment, your own things, your own atmosphere. Make sure the space is tidy and calm.
Set and Setting for Microdosing
Dose in the morning, the activating effect can disrupt sleep.
Do not plan stressful obligations on a dosing day.
Note how you feel before and after. Patterns become visible.
A fixed dosing environment makes comparison easier.
